Police investigating a case of malicious damage to property and assault after a mentally challenged woman was beaten in Ga-Mashashane

POLOKWANE-The Police in Mashashane are investigating a case of Malicious damage to property and Assault with the intention to cause bodily graviously harm (Assault GBH) after a mentally challenged woman was found in the house and assaulted in the process at a nearby village.

The 47-year-old complainant in this matter,  alleged that on 14 October 2023 at about 05:00  she was surprised to find a stranger inside her house at Ga Madiba village. They alleged the suspect was swearing at them. She damaged the house equipment and clothes to the value of R2500.

The suspect was later identified as a 61-year-old woman who is alleged to be mentally challenged.

The police were summoned to the scene and she was taken to Lebowakgomo Thabamoopo Hospital for mental observation.

Furthermore, the children of the alleged mentally challenged woman noticed the video circulating on various social media platforms showcasing their mother being assaulted,  they immediately went to the police station to open a case of assault against the owner of the house.

The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service in Limpopo has condemned the incident. “No one has a right to assault a mentally challenged person, even with a slight provocation.  The matter should have been handled differently since the mentally challenged person was not violent, or causing any threat or danger. We will leave the matter in the hands of the prosecutor to make an informed decision in this regard. This includes the alleged damage to property,” remarked Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe.

No one has been arrested yet and police investigation continues at this stage.
