NAMAKGALE- Police in Namakgale are investigating a case of arson after unknown suspects set alight two cars and some part of the house belonging to a Phalaborwa Community activist.

A silver VW Caddy and a Mercedes Benz E240 belonging to Edmond Mbetse were both burned to ashes in the early hours of Saturday in Namakgale.

The motive behind the torching is not known at this stage and no injuries were reported.

Mbetse is known for advocating for service delivery in Ba-Phalaborwa municipality and his latest campaign was for advocating to residents to refrain from buying goods or food from foreign-owned shops.

In the past weeks, he was served with a summons from a Tzaneen Law firm on behalf of foreign spaza shop owners who warned him to refrain from telling the people of Phalaborwa to stop buying from foreign-owned spaza shops.

Mbetse says he is not shaken by the incident, in a 3-minute video recorded after the incident he said the incident will not stop to tell people to stop buying from foreign-owned spazas because they are selling expired food.

“ This will not silence me unless they kill me but I am still saying stop buying from the foreign shop” he said
