LENYENYE- A 60-year-old illegal Zimbabwean national sentenced to Life and 2 years imprisonment for raping a minor.
Peter Kaundura was sentenced by the Naphuno Regional Court for the rape of a 6-year-old girl and illegal immigration on Tuesday, 25th July 2023.
The court found out that on Wednesday, 1st January 2020 during the night in Topanama village outside Lephepane in Greater Tzaneen, the accused who was staying with his girlfriend, her 6-year-old grandchild and uncle, woke up while his girlfriend was asleep and started to rape the 6-year-old girl.
He was caught in the act by the uncle who came back to the house in the late hours. The matter was subsequently reported to the police and a case of rape was opened.
The case was handed over to Detective Warrant Officer Matome Johannes Ramatseba of Tzaneen Family Violence and Child Sexual Offences (FCS) for investigation. He traced and arrested the accused on the 17th of March 2020.
He proceeded with the investigation and managed to oppose bail for the accused in court. The accused remained in custody until the court convicted him of rape and contravention of the illegal immigration Act and sentenced him to Life imprisonment for rape and 2 years for Contravention of the Immigration Act.
The sentences will run concurrently.
