The tragic event occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the suspect is alleged to have deliberately ignited the house while the elderly woman was inside.

The victim, unable to escape the flames, was tragically burned to death. The suspect, who was released on parole prior to the incident, has since been arrested and made his first court appearance.

In response to the tragedy, Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba will visit the bereaved family to offer condolences and support. Dr. Ramathuba condemned the act and highlighted its occurrence during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign aimed at raising awareness and combating violence against women and vulnerable groups.

“It is deeply disheartening to witness such a heinous act in our society, especially during a time when we are advocating for the protection of women, children, and the elderly,” said Dr. Ramathuba. “We have a collective responsibility to protect our senior citizens, and we urge all residents to report any criminal activities to law enforcement agencies. We commend the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their swift response in apprehending the suspect.”
