GIYANI- The opposition parties in the Greater Giyani Municipality Council hold the view that the suspension of the municipal manager Mkhacani Chauke is politically motivated.

According to the Municipal statement, the MM was suspended on the allegations of financial misconduct related to the garnished R10 million and his suspension started effective immediately on Monday,05 September 2022 with full pay.

” Council has resolved and approved that the suspended Municipal Manager be subject to a due and just disciplinary hearing” statement reads.

It is alleged that the suspended MM is accused of financial irregularities in connection with the multimillion landfill project in Giyani.

The EFF in Limpopo has accused the municipal ANC faction for having launched a “witch-hunt” against the MM for not benefiting from the proceeds of the tender.

” While we are not exonerating the MM from any wrong doing, we are equally not oblivious of the fact that the MM may not be the only municipal official who should be held accountable in these” , the party said.

The DA municipal party leader Mandla Chauke said they welcome the suspension of anyone who is corrupt, but further said the infights between different ANC factions in the municipality largely influenced the suspension of the MM.

It said that council sitting was divided after the presentation of the MM’s suspension and then the opposition parties requested five minutes to caucus and decided not sign the attendance register.

” The Monday council was not even properly run; the agenda of the sitting was presented at 14h15 for a meeting that started at 14h00″ Chauke said.

During the Monday Special sitting, the council speaker announced the Acting MM who will presented before the council in its next sitting.
