TZANEEN- The National Council of SPCA calls for strict regulations on the ownership of the ‘aggressive’ power breed pit bulls as domestic pets, while admitting that the breed has a high level of aggression.

The authoritative animal welfare organisation’s call for strict regulations on the ownership of pit bulls instead of euthanising them.

The country it’s up in arms with calling for the ban on the breed’s ownership, after the aggressive power breed dog mauled an 8-year-old boy to death at Vista Park in Bloemfontein.

It is alleged that the aggressive dog unleashed itself from its enclosure and jumped over to the neighbour’s premises to attack and kill a helpless grade 3 pupil, Olebogeng Mosime after severely biting him on the neck and chest.

It took several bullets from the police to take the pit-bull down.

Olebogeng’s vicious attack by the Pitbull comes after another attack on a 10-year-old child from Gelvandale, Gqebera in Nelson Mandela Bay who also died from the ferocious attacks of the pitbull last month.

Flowing from several vicious attacks on innocent children and other animals, Sizwe Kupelo Foundation (an organisation tasked with protecting vulnerable children), had launched a petition calling for the banning of pitbulls as domestic pets, and has already garnered more than 50 000 signatures.

Responding to the banning of Pitbull, NSPCA Senior Inspector Naz Applesammy says the protection of human and animal lives, however they don’t call for a ban of pitbull ownership but rather strict restrictions be put in place for ownership.

” We don’t call for all Pitbulls to be euthanized, nor do we call for a ban on ownership, our call is that we should put in place stronger regulations to all pitbull owners to have permits of breeding the dogs” Applesammy said.

Applesammy said people interested in a pitbull can eliminate its aggression through socialising and give it enough attention.

The NSPCA has urged all owners who no longer wish to keep their pitbulls to hand them to their local SPCAs, Animal welfare or Private veterinarian.
