Nigerian National Sentenced to Five Years for Drug Dealing in Tzaneen

TZANEEN-On Monday, 27 January 2025, the Tzaneen Regional Court sentenced 44-year-old Nigerian national Longinus Chikete to five years in direct imprisonment.

The sentence follows his conviction on 11 July 2024, after being caught in a police operation by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit Narcotics and other SAPS units.

Chikete was found in possession of 45 sachets of crystal meth and 2 packets of cocaine, valued at R47,510 and weighing 139.56 grams, after his vehicle—a white Nissan Datsun GO—was searched at a shopping complex in Tzaneen.

His sentence includes:

  • 3 years for drug possession
  • 2 years for drug trafficking
  • 18 months, wholly suspended for 5 years, provided he does not commit similar offenses.

The sentences are not to run concurrently.
