GA-SEKORORO- The highly anticipated completion of the D21 road project, which was set to be finished by this December has hit a major setback.
Residents of Ga-Sekororo, a community situated along the road, were left dismayed when they noticed a large pothole in the road’s surface during the final stages of construction.
The pothole, which appeared following heavy rainfall in the area, is situated in a stretch of the D21 road that connects key areas such as Hlohlokwe, Shikwane, and Matshelapata near Lalas.
The visibly damaged section of the road has raised concerns among local residents, many of whom have called for the construction project to be redone from scratch.
“I once prayed for rain before they finished, and God answered my prayer,” said one concerned resident, reflecting on the unexpected development.
The heavy rains may have exposed flaws in the construction process, leading to the emergence of the pothole before the road’s official completion.
Residents are now questioning the quality of work and demanding accountability. “It is concerning that such a problem has occurred just as the road was nearing its final stages,” one resident remarked. “We are asking for the project to be started afresh to avoid further issues down the line.”
The D21 road, which is a crucial route for local transportation, was expected to provide improved access and infrastructure for the communities in the area. However, with the appearance of the pothole, there are growing doubts about the durability and longevity of the construction.
Despite multiple attempts to reach out for comments, both the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) and Maruleng Municipality have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the pothole or the state of the construction.
This situation has prompted residents to call for better transparency in communication and clearer explanations of the construction and engineering processes. Many locals expressed frustration at the use of complex construction and engineering terminologies that are difficult to understand for the general public.
“As regular citizens, we are often left in the dark when it comes to understanding these technical terms,” one resident said. “It would be helpful if the authorities could communicate with us in a way that we can understand and engage with.”
As the road remains unfinished, the community waits for an official statement and clear course of action from the relevant authorities. Residents continue to hope that the issue will be addressed promptly to ensure that their new road does not face further setbacks.
The situation has sparked discussions about the need for better quality control and more effective communication between contractors, government agencies, and the communities they serve.
It remains to be seen whether the D21 road project will be completed on schedule or if further delays are on the horizon.
