POLOKWANE – Long-serving and much-loved current affairs presenter, Hlayiseka Mabunda, has allegedly been dismissed from Munghana Lonene FM following disciplinary proceedings relating to late coming.

Mabunda, who had been with the SABC for 18 years, confirmed his departure via a heartfelt social media post. Known for his commanding presence and insightful hosting on the popular “Tiko a xi Etleli” show, Mabunda claims he was unfairly targeted during the process leading to his dismissal.

According to Mabunda, his offense was arriving late on some occasions, a matter he says was weaponized by those who no longer wanted him at the station. He expressed frustration that his case was handled in isolation, despite others allegedly committing similar infractions without consequence.

“My sin was being late sometimes. My monitors made sure I got punished because I was no longer wanted,” he wrote.

While SABC News has not released an official statement on the matter, Mabunda’s social media post has sparked conversations among loyal listeners and colleagues in the radio industry.

Mabunda was highly respected within the Munghana Lonene FM team, having worked alongside veterans such as Edith Nkuna, Costner Mthombeni, Mlungisi Shivamba, and Tiyiselani Ndlovu. In 2020, he ventured into digital broadcasting with his own station, Flair Nine-Nine, though the project ended within five months due to reported salary disputes with staff.

His distinctive voice and sharp current affairs analysis made him a staple in the daily lives of many listeners across Limpopo and beyond. His sudden departure has left a noticeable gap in the station’s line-up.

“He will be sorely missed on the airwaves. His news delivery and voice behind the mic were unmatched,” a listener commented online.
