POLOKWANE-Motorists travelling along the N1 and surrounding routes are urged to exercise extreme caution as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 9 Disruptive Rain Warning, effective from 00h00 to 23h59 on Sunday.

According to SAWS, there is a medium likelihood of significant impacts as severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall across Gauteng as well as parts of the North West,Free State, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Highveld from early Sunday morning, continuing throughout the day.

Forecasts indicate rainfall accumulations of 100–150 mm, posing major risks to both built-up environments and communities living near streams and rivers.

Authorities warn that flooding may become severe, creating life-threatening conditions, and disruptions could extend into Monday morning.

Heavy rainfall of 100 mm to 150 mm is expected, which may cause widespread flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and settlements, danger to life due to fast-flowing water, and possible displacement of households.

Road closures, severe traffic disruptions, power interruptions, and infrastructure damage are also possible.

Residents and motorists—especially those using the N1 corridor—are urged to stay indoors where possible, avoid contact with metal objects during thunderstorms, and delay travel unless absolutely necessary.

People are advised to avoid flooded bridges and roads, move valuables to higher ground, and keep children away from streams and rivers. If trapped in a vehicle in rising waters, they should exit immediately and move to higher ground.

Emergency services will remain on high alert throughout the warning period.
