ELIM – In a moment filled with both sorrow and remembrance, the mother of the late Pfano Khomola from Bungeni Village (Manyunyu section) visited his gravesite just weeks after he was laid to rest.
Pfano, a 16-year-old known for his accomplishments as a book author, Chess Master, rugby player, student, and actor, tragically passed away on July 7, 2024, after being admitted to Bungeni Initiation School on June 20, 2024.
On the day of his passing, Pfano complained of feeling unwell and was taken to a medical doctor for a check-up. He was given medication and declared to be in good condition.
However, later that day, his condition worsened, and he was taken back to the doctor by the Traditional Surgeon.
After re-examining him, the doctor certified Pfano dead, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Hosi Given Bungeni recalled the heartbreaking sequence of events, “Later on in the day, he again complained of the same illness.
The Traditional Surgeon drove with him back to the same doctor who re-examined him and certified him dead.”
At his graveside, Pfano’s mother shared her grief on social media, reading one of his poems as she stood by his resting place. Her poignant words highlighted the deep void left by her son’s untimely death.
Pfano was more than just a child; he was a beacon of hope and inspiration to the youth in his community.
His intelligence, leadership, and motivational spirit touched many lives, leaving a legacy that his mother vows to keep alive.
In honor of Pfano’s memory and his passion for chess, his family has established the Pfano Chess Foundation, run by his brother Pfunzo Mathevula.
They are currently raising funds through the sale of Pfano’s book, with proceeds supporting the foundation.
Those interested in purchasing a copy of Pfano’s book can contact his sibling, Pfunzo Mathebula, or his aunt, Sheila wa Mutlhokovetseri, on Facebook. Each copy is priced at R150, with all sales directed toward continuing Pfano’s dream of inspiring and uplifting the youth.
Pfano was laid to rest on July 14, 2024. His mother, in her grief, remains determined to ensure that her son’s legacy continues to inspire and impact the community.
