MOLALANE-A mother who abandoned a one-year-old child in a tavern was seen again drinking with the child on Saturday evening.
It is alleged that when the child was found by the security guards roaming the street at Ga-Thibedi in the wee hours of Saturday, October 22, she was actually abandoned in a tavern by a mother whose name could not be revealed to protect the identity of the child.
According to one community member who lives closer to the mother’s house at Molalane new stand in ward 05 Maruleng municipality, says the woman abuses alcohol every day and when she is drunk, she neglects the child.
“Even on that night she left the child in a tavern, after the child noticing that her mother is not around, she decided to go out and start looking for her mother, fortunately the security guard saw her and decided to take the child to the police, on their way to the police station they met the police vehicle patrolling the area.
The child was taken to the Thusong police, the Police decided to alert the media to circulate the information about the child.
A man identified himself as Elvis Malepe came forward and took the police to the mother’s house.
On their arrival, the mother was found drunk and sleeping, she started insulting the police. When she was asked about the whereabout the child, she couldn’t answer.
Maruleng Municipality Ward 7 councillor Taola Shayi who was assisting to locate the mother condemned her behaviour and suggested that social workers be involved to take the child away from the mother.
“They must take the child away from her and give custody to someone or they send her to a place of safety. She is not safe under her care” Cllr Shayi Said
“The child is seriously suffering, unfortunately she is young, she can’t speak out but as the community we need to do something to save this young soul before something bad happens” Tumi Tumza added.
