NKOWANKOWA-A woman has handed herself over to the police after abandoning her newborn in a bridge at Mariveni village outside Nkowankowa in Greater Tzaneen.
Police say a mother of four children, handed herself in after her baby was found.
The shocking discovery was made by a passerby at around 8:00 on Tuesday morning.
The passerby allegedly alerted the community who responded to the call and they found the baby whose gender is not known at this stage who was still alive.
The newborn baby named “Nyiko” was then taken to Letaba Hospital for medical attention.
A day later, a woman handed herself in at the Ritavi police station and stated that she was the mother of the abandoned newborn baby.
She appeared in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court today, August 31. She will remain in custody, her next appearance will be next week.
