MOHLABA VILLAGE-The residents of Mohlaba village, Greater Tzaneen, are concerned and fearing for their lives after a dozen community members allegedly raised concerns about a cholera scare after drinking contaminated water.
According to a resident who did not want to be named, Ward 24 has not had water for over two weeks. Thus, the municipality promised to arrange trucks to deliver clean water, but, instead, they delivered water fetched from a river and some villagers allegedly started falling sick after consuming it.
This comes at a time when the country is battling an outbreak of the deadly bacterial disease.
“We have not had water for weeks. We complained about this to the municipality because we can’t afford to buy water. To our amazement, the delivery truck never came as arranged. They then resorted to fetching water from a river somewhere and delivering it to us.
Although the water was not fit for consumption, some households used it anyway. It now looks like we are going to suffer the consequences “, an anonymous said.
Anonymous further averred that some locals that have the symptoms of cholera have already visited local health facilities to get treatment while those that are yet to get checked are sick with worry.
Councillor Phillip Mayimele said that they were supposed to deliver water to the residents on Saturday, June 24, however, the truck was scheduled to deliver to another village and never arrived at Mohlaba village.
“Every household is going to get a standpipe, but, the project is in the hands of Mopani District Municipality. I called the community and told them we can only be able to deliver water to them on Saturday, July 1st”, Mayimele said.
