Minibus taxi stolen while the driver was relieving himself in Giyani

GIYANI-A  33-year-old male suspect was arrested by the police, shortly after he allegedly stole a Toyota Quantum motor vehicle at Mototsi taxi rank in Giyani on the afternoon of 26 December 2023.

The driver reportedly got out of the vehicle to relieve himself, leaving the keys on the ignition. He was shocked when he returned to find the vehicle missing and he immediately reported the matter at Giyani Police Station.A case of theft of the motor vehicle was opened.

Police later received information that the suspect was cornered by a group of people from another taxi association along the R578 road near Bode Village. Upon arrival at the scene, they found the suspect being assaulted by the group and they managed to rescue him. The stolen motor vehicle was recovered.

The alleged suspect was then transported to the hospital with the ambulance.

No one has been arrested in connection with the assault and police investigations are ongoing regarding the incident.

The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the swift arrest of the suspect and recovery of the stolen motor vehicle.She further urged communities to report suspected  criminals to the police  and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The suspect was charged with theft and will appear before Giyani Magistrate’s Court in due course.
