MEDINGEN VILLAGE-Prudence Sekgodisho has earned her stripes in a male-dominated sport of athletics. The 20-year-old Varsity College student is ranked amongst the very best in the sports fraternity and continues to soar to great heights.
Sekgodisho was born and raised in Medingen village, Greater Letaba. In a sit down with Tzaneen Voice, the athlete reflected on her journey that began at Medingen Primary School.
“My parents were dedicated runners. I did not think that I would also follow that path nonetheless. I started running while I was in primary school doing grade four (4). Although I fell in love with the sport then, I just participated to pass time and did not envision myself pursuing sports as a career “, Sekgodisho said.
The athlete further mentioned that she draws inspiration from her former primary school teachers Ndayeni Moila who is late and Peter Makhubele, who have been her mentors and biggest cheerleaders.
“My primary school teachers took me from nothing. They pushed to get me this far and I am eternally grateful. Caster Semenya is someone I also look up to. I am coached by Samuel Sepeng who used to coach her. It’s a dream realized “, said Sekgodisho.
The journey has not been entirely smooth for Sekgodisho. However, she said that this year was her breakthrough and she chooses to focus on the positive. She highlighted that she is ranked top fifteen (15) of the world’s best athletes and listed in the top five (5) of the best in the African continent.
To top it all, Sekgodisho recently received the nomination for Senior Women’s Athlete of the year.
