LIMPOPO- The Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment & Tourism (LEDET) Rodgers Monama announces new alcohol trading hours, which will see liquor outlets close by 12h00, midnight.
MEC Monama made this announcement during his Nelson Mandela Day address at Modimolle Victim Support Centre on Tuesday, 18 July 2023, on the belief that alcohol contributes to GBV, child abuse, rape and other sexual misconducts.
“It is through this that the department will implement Midnight law which will see liquor outlets that our people usually refer to as night-clubs, taverns, sheebeens, and liquor restaurants being brought to a standstill by midnight during all operating days” Ledet MEC said.
He further indicated that his department needs to play a critical role in reducing alcohol abuse to encourage moderate home drinking as opposed to night drinking life at various liquor outlets.
The midnight law regarding the closure of all liquor restaurants will be implemented from the 1st of August 2023.
The current liquor trading hours run from 9 am to 2 am, however, some outlets especially in the rural areas operate until the following morning.
