Mayor Molapisane: Ward Committee Position is not for Political Structures

By Thabo Monyela

TZANEEN- The Greater Tzaneen Mayor Cllr Gerson Molapisane, vows to guard against any political interference in the ward committee establishments, during the media networking session held at the Municipal Chambers on Thursday, February 10.

“We are not in political space here but in government, so we ought to service all members of our communities. The ward committee positions are not for political structures but for the legitimate and and functional community structures such SGBs, Churches and others “ the mayor emphasised.

This comes after after Municipality oppositions were fuming after being sidelined on the awareness of the ward committee establishment meetings that commenced last weekend on Sunday, February 6.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African Freedom Party (AFP) alleges that the ANC-led Greater Tzaneen Municipality deliberately sidelined them from the awareness of the ward committee establishment meetings in an attempt to limit the ward committee establishments within the ANC circles.

Lending credence to the rumour, is a less detailed SMS that Tzaneen Voice has seen which was sent to the opposition parties on Friday afternoon, which has no indication of venue, time and deployment.

During the media networking session, EFF Municipal executive member cllr Clifford Letsoalo, confirmed to the media that there was an activity to manipulate the ward committee establishment processes.

“It is clear that the ANC municipal caucus wanted to handle this ward committee establishments in a hush manner in order to favour their own comrades and as EFF we are going to deal with them ” , said Cllr Letsoalo.

The African Freedom Party ( AFP) leader, Cllr Ronny Shai confirmed to the publication that he was not aware of these meetings until he received a less detailed sms on Friday.

” The AFP condemns and distances itself from the ongoing awareness ward committee establishment meetings, because this matter was never announced during the Lenyenye municipal council and will ensure that we attend to this matter” the party’s sole councillors said.

The attempts to get hold of Democratic Alliance (DA) were unsuccessful.

The GTM then yesterday, released the detailed ward committee establishments schedule, which will run from 27th February to 18 March 2022.
