BRIDGEWAY-Parents and teachers at Mathlari high school, Greater Tzaneen, have raised grave concerns following the alarming rate of learners who jump the school fence or idle behind school toilets during academic hours to skip lessons.

It is said that because the school closes its gates throughout the day, some learners have become lawless by forcing their way out of the school premises.

It is said that this behaviour is common in boys.

“These boys smoke weed and cigarettes during lessons. We are struggling to manage and control them. We have sat down with their parents to help us find a solution to the predicament, however, all intervention has failed”, a teacher said.

A parent who brought the matter to Tzaneen Voice’s attention said that the learners’ behaviour is worrisome and that harsher punishment must be implemented to mitigate the challenge pronto.

The headmaster of the school Nkhensani Makhubele could not be reached for comment.

The provincial office of the Department of Education was notified but no comment was issued.
