NAMAKGALE- Faranani Properties the main contractor of OPD in Maphuta Malatji Hospital is alleged to be in the process of terminating the contract with the Limpopo Department of Health and Department of Public Works following a series of defaults by the Limpopo Department of public works.

In December 2022 after the community threatened a big protest for the project to be completed there was an agreement that was reached with the contractor that R28 million will be paid but the department only paid R16 million. The project was started in August 2017 whereby the contractor Faranani properties was handed over the project to work together with local subcontractors as part of empowerment. In December 2022 the contractor and the community were promised that during the first week of January 2023, the project will resume and the contractor will be paid his money.

To date, the project has not resumed. It was mentioned that cables and other equipment have been stolen in the presence of security at the hospital. It was further said that patients travel to Phalaborwa town to be screened while there are screening machines that are not being used at the hospital.

Efforts to get a comment from Neil Shikwamabane the spokesperson of the Limpopo health Department were fruitless as he did not answer his phone and he did not respond to the WhatsApp message we sent him.
