POLOKWANE- A 36-year-old man arrested for allegedly burning his heavily pregnant wife with a hot iron at Seleteng Ga-Mphahlele is an employee of Limpopo Department of Social Development.
Limpopo MEC for Social Development Nandi Ndalane has strongly condemned the alleged attack of a pregnant woman by her spouse who is working for the department.
Ndalane says the 36-year-old employee attached to their Capricorn district office was arrested for allegedly assaulting his heavily pregnant wife with a hot iron following a domestic dispute on on Friday, Frebruary 02.
According to information, the couple had an argument about a cell phone, and in the process, the victim’s husband plugged an electric iron and started to assault her with it.
She sustained injuries on both her hands. Thereafter, fled the scene. The victim was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Police were alerted about the incident, and a case of Assault GBH was opened against the suspect.
The suspect appeared before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court on Monday and his case was remanded to 12 February 2024.
Departments provincial spokesperson Joshua Kwapa says employees of the department are expected to be exemplary in advocating for gender-based violence free society and seek professional intervention in the event of domestic disputes because of their proximity to the service.
