It is alleged that the 31-year-old Twani Mabecele, affectionately known as “Moapostola” because of his religious beliefs, was caught red handed stealing from a local spaza shop in the said village on the fateful day.
Community members allegedly confronted him. Fearing for his life, the victim is alleged to have fled from the scene and the mob gave chase.
Reportedly, after they caught up with him, he stopped, took out a gun and shot himself in the head. It is said that the mob proceeded to stone him while he lay on the ground.
Malamulele police station communication officer, Sergeant Busisiwe Khuzwayo confirmed the incident.
“We don’t condone thieving but we condemn the action taken by mob. It is a crime to take the law into your own hands. People must at all time involve police in matters involving crime to avoid such occurrences”, she said.
