HA – MASHAMBA: A man was confirmed dead following an excessive consumption of alcohol at Blue Corner tavern in Ha – Mashamba near Elim over the weekend.
The man died shortly after he drank the entire bottle of Jägermeister
Jägermeister is a German digestif liqueur made with 56 different herbs and botanicals, invented in 1934. It’s 35% ABV, which is relatively high alcohol for a liqueur.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, police are investigating an inquest.
“Police in Waterval outside Louis Trichardt have opened a case of inquest following an incident of apparent misuse of alcohol that took place at one of the local liquor outlets at Mashamba village where the patrons allegedly participated in what they called a “drinking competition”.
The winner who could consume the entire bottle of Jagermeister within a specified time, would get R200.00 cash. One of them immediately collapsed thereafter and was taken to the local clinic where he was certified dead.”
Mojapelo said the incident allegedly happened on Sunday 10 July 2022 at about 23h30. Police investigations are continuing.
This add to the death toll of tarven related incidents this month and it is said to see people dying in places which they go to have “fun”.
Just last weekend 14 people died at a tarven in Soweto after being shot by unknown suspects and on the same day in separate incidents 2 people died in katlehong and 4 died in Maritzburg and these were all tarven related deaths.
