GA-THAKO- A 29-year-old man was chained to a tree and beaten to death at Ga-Thako on Saturday, December 16.
Tzaneen Police received a complaint at about 07:00 about a mob justice attack. On arrival at the scene, the police found a 29-year-old African male lying motionless in a supine position with a chain around his ankle.
The Emergency Medical personnel declared him dead on the scene and the deceased was later identified as Machabe Machete of Moleketla village.
It is alleged that the deceased knocked on the door at about 03:00 this morning and when the family members came out he ran away but dropped his cell phone.
The victim was traced through his cellphone and found at his residence at Moleketla where he was taken back to Thako village and chained to a tree and he was beaten to death by an angry mob who suspected that he is responsible for crimes such as rapes and break-ins in the area.
A case of murder was opened and the police have taken some persons of interest for questioning.
The police management condemns these acts of vigilantism in the strongest possible terms.
