MAKHADO : 18 people suspected cash in transit heist robbers have been shot and killed in Makhado in the Vhembe District on Friday.
The suspects were killed in a shootout that lasted for ninety minutes with the police.
The National Commissioner of the Police General Fannie Masemola says the 16 men and 2 women were shot dead following a 1 hour and 30 minutes shootout with the police on Friday afternoon.
He says the police cornered the suspects in a house with the view of arresting them, however, the robbers shot and wounded one police officer in the shootout.
General Masemola says the robbers were planning to transport the money in an ambulance to Gauteng.
The wounded police officer has been transported to hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
Police confirmed that four suspects have been arrested.
