GA-MATIPANE VILLAGE -A 24year-old Joshua Abigael Manyama known as “Jay chael August SA Boy”, is a local rapper and hip-hop artist from Bolobedu Ga- Matipane.
His stage name Jay chael August emanates from his name Joshua (Jay), his father’s name Michael (Chael), and August as his birth month.
The Bolobedu born rapper realized his music career at the age of 16 when his family bought a Dstv in 2012 and got inspired by Philadelphia-born rapper Meek Mill’s music. “My passion for music did not deter me from doing my school work,” he said.
According to the artist, he matriculated in 2015 at Morwashehla Secondary school and currently studying a higher Certificate of Education with the University of South Africa (UNISA). “Apart from being a musician, I would like to see myself as an educator, who contributes immensely to the development of our already disadvantaged communities” Jay Chael August mentioned.
Many families don’t approve of their children to be involved in the music industry as it is perceived to be exposing their lives to drugs and alcohol abuse. However, with Jay Chael August SA, is a different scenario as his father is his biggest fan and he usually dances to his songs with both his father and uncle.
On August 18, he released a single titled “chasing the dream ” which is currently doing well in the music industry.
The Mabarebare hitmaker said his latest song “Mabarebare ” is based on the people who talk too much and do not appreciate his hard work. “On the day I released this song, was told that my music is bad and that hit me home, I used this song as a healing process,” the rapper said.
The rapper said his ultimate dream is to perform worldwide gigs and aim to collaborate with the likes of Emtee, 25K, and Meek Mill himself. He would also like to see himself owning a studio that would help to establish many talents in rural areas.
He further advised that is pertinent that upcoming artists need to be focused on chasing their dreams.
