PHALABORWA-The South African National Parks (SANParks) management has informed the public of an ongoing situation involving a pride of lions on the property of Ngwenya Lodge, located near the Crocodile Bridge entrance to Kruger National Park. Initially spotted within the lodge’s fenced area, the pride prompted swift intervention by SANParks and the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA).
A veterinary team and a SANParks helicopter were dispatched to the scene to safely drive the lions back into Kruger National Park. After several hours of intense work on September 11, 2024, the team successfully darted four female and four male lions. These animals were safely returned to the park’s Crocodile Bridge section, with a tracking collar fitted to one of the lions to monitor their movements.
However, despite the team’s efforts, it appears that the pride may be under pressure from other lion prides in the park. In the late hours following the relocation, the lions made their way back to Ngwenya Lodge, raising concerns about the possibility of further conflicts.
The MTPA and SANParks teams are now assessing the situation and exploring alternative solutions for relocating the pride successfully. As the situation develops, SANParks will provide updates on their social media platforms.
Guests and nearby residents are advised to remain cautious, and both agencies appreciate the public’s patience and support as efforts continue to resolve the matter.
