Limpopo ready for 2022 initiation school season after two year break

Limpopo CoGHSTA  has in April 2022, received over 400 permit applications for initiation schools. This is s initiation schools are set to commence in June 2022, after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
The school usually runs for 6 weeks during the winter school holidays, indicating that a few days of school are missed by learners.
Many parents have welcomed the decision by the government to open the traditional practice nonetheless, and emphasized the importance of stringent COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of their children.
The Department of Health’s spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana was quoted saying that. “Although vaccination is encouraged, it is however not mandatory”.
The Department of Education also welcomed the decision in a statement.

“The Department recognizes the fact that communities have the right to engage in their cultural practices. Equally, the department has a responsibility to ensure that children have rights to education”, the statement read.
Moreover, the department’s spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene emphasized that catch-up programs must be implemented in schools that strictly cater to these learners upon returning to academics.
The Department of Traditional Affairs Housing and Cooperative Governance has not announced an official date when the school will commence.
