TURFLOOP – Popular Limpopo comedian Jeffrey Makhwiting, better known on stage as Elaneng Skobo, has once again proven that laughter and learning can go hand in hand.

The Bochum-born entertainer has proudly graduated with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Limpopo (UL) during the institution’s Autumn Graduation ceremonies.

Makhwiting, who first gained popularity for his sharp wit and relatable comedic content, has long balanced humour with ambition. “I’ve been making people laugh since I could speak,” he says, reflecting on his journey from village life in Bochum to UL’s lecture halls and national stages.

After matriculating in 2014, he took a gap year before enrolling at UL in 2016 to pursue a BA in Media Studies, which he completed in 2018.

Always thinking ahead, he added languages to his degree, saying with a grin, “Just in case I didn’t make it big in media, I’d have something solid to fall back on—like teaching.”

While studying, Makhwiting was also a radio presenter at Radio Turf, where he sharpened his on-air charisma. His talent was soon recognised when he won the Best Comedian award at the Sepedi Music Awards (SEMA) in 2019.

That same year, he appeared on the reality TV show Date My Family, hoping to catch the attention of casting agents.

Even with moments of national fame, life wasn’t always smooth. Between auditions, brand promotions, and creating viral content, he built a strong online presence, boasting over 500,000 Facebook followers and more than 268,000 TikTok fans.

His skits led to MC bookings and paid brand partnerships across the country.

In 2021, he joined the corporate world at WeBuyCars, but comedy remained his true passion. In 2024, he made a bold decision to resign and return to UL full-time to pursue his PGCE.

“Going back to being a student wasn’t easy,” he admits. “Imagine MCing a wedding on Saturday, then writing an educational psychology test on Monday. One minute, I’m joking about in-laws, the next, I’m memorising Bloom’s Taxonomy.”

Despite the challenges, he maintained his hustle, often balancing gigs and assignments.

“Sometimes, I’d even get content ideas while studying,” he laughs, “but I had to stay focused.”

Now a qualified educator, Makhwiting has begun his teaching career in Maleboho West Circuit in Bochum. “Graduating again feels amazing,” he beams. “Returning to study and becoming a teacher is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

As he reflects on the journey, Makhwiting says the UL Autumn Graduation ceremonies have reignited his academic flame. “I want more belts,” he says, hinting at future academic pursuits.

Whether in the classroom or on stage, Elaneng Skobo continues to inspire with his humour, humility, and hunger for growth.
