LIMPOPO – The 2024 Initiation School Season in Limpopo is set to commence from June 14 to July 13, with a total of 272 female initiation schools receiving approval. The Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) has meticulously reviewed applications to ensure a safe and well-regulated season.
This year, the PICC received 703 applications, including 389 for male initiation schools and 314 for female initiation schools, from various districts across the province.
Out of these, 631 applications have been approved, comprising 359 male and 272 female initiation schools.
The Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) has implemented stricter measures through the establishment of the PICC under the Customary Initiation Act 02 of 2021. This act grants PICC members the authority to oversee the activities of senior traditional leaders, principals, surgeons, and caregivers, as well as the cooperation of parents, to prevent fatalities and the operation of illegal schools.
In collaboration with the Provincial Department of Health, senior traditional leaders, principals of initiation schools, traditional surgeons, and caregivers have undergone training to ensure they perform their roles and functions effectively.
Hosi Shitlhamgoma Chauke, Chairperson of the PICC, emphasized the importance of not enrolling children under the age of 12 in initiation schools, citing past fatalities as a cautionary example. He also stressed the necessity for parents and guardians to enroll their children in the 631 approved and registered initiation schools to ensure accountability and safety.
Furthermore, only registered medical doctors and experienced traditional surgeons will be permitted to perform initiation rituals, in partnership with the Department of Health, to avoid injuries and botched circumcisions.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) will be on standby to address any illegal activities, including reports of assault, abduction, the operation of unauthorized schools, and overcrowding. Daily monitoring of initiation schools by PICC members and Traditional Affairs officials will take place from June 14 to July 13, 2024, to ensure a safe and successful initiation season.
The proactive measures and thorough preparations underscore the commitment of the Limpopo Provincial Government and its partners to maintain the cultural significance of initiation schools while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.
