MHLABA CROSS-Majority of poor students relies on government funding to pay their tuition in South Africa. In hindsight, these students tend to give up after being rejected by the financial aid scheme, inevitably facing a bleak future.
Letaba Tvet’s final year Office Administration student, Dzunani Nkhwashu (28) made alternative means to see her through her academic years.
The Mhlaba Cross-born student started a laundry business to pay for her studies after being rejected by NSFAS.
The mother of “two handsome boys” as she refers to them, reflected on her journey and the help she is receiving from good Samaritans after her story was published on Tzaneen Voice.
“My parents separated and it became difficult to pay fees. After being rejected by NSFAS, I stood up for myself and started washing windows, sweeping people’s yards and doing laundry. The money eased my burden greatly”, Nkhwashu mentioned.
She has been receiving endless calls from people who read her story offering to pay her tuition fees also offering other donations.
“I am overwhelmed by the love my story received. I appreciate the donations because I will now be able to raise my kids properly.
Hopefully, this is the beginning of great things to come and the business will grow” she said.
“I advise students who are facing the same difficulties to not rest on their laurels. Start small with the little that you have. Also, starting a business-like plaiting people’s hair doesn’t require money. Venture into those spaces”, she emphasized.
