Kgapane Family In Destitute After Severe Storm

KGAPANE– Heavy storms that has swept through most parts of the country, left a trail of destruction in Mthembeka village in Kgapane, Greater Letaba Municipality.

The storm ravaged through the Lebepe family home at destroying the roof, furniture, and other valuables, this was the second time that they had to experience this traumatic setback.

Maria Lebepe told our reporter that some years back, the roof of their home was blown away and the wall of the house fell on their 10-year-old son who was left partially paralyzed. She further mentioned that their six-year-old daughter was washed away into the nearby river. Her tiny body was recovered on the river bank the next day.

“The Greater Letaba Municipality came and donated food for the funeral and promised to return with more help but to no avail” Lebepe Said

Lebepe went on to tell us that the roof was blown away again because the roofing was not strong.

The department visited us the next day and erected a tent as a temporary shelter, provide us with food parcels and promised to return with more assistance but we are still waiting with bated breath.

Lebepe further stated that her deceased husband was the sole breadwinner and she only survive through odd jobs.

“I am pleading with Greater Letaba municipality to meet me halfway with building material and food parcels” Said Lebepe.

The Greater Letaba Municipality confirmed that, they are aware of the family’s situation and counselling was provided in both cases and even the province was alerted.

“They received counselling when the incident happened. If they are not coping, it means Department of Social Development must intervene.

“We have submitted their application to the CoGHSTA ‘s disaster management section” Letaba Municipality spokesperson Lovers Maenetja said.

Meanwhile Limpopo Department of Social Development Spokesperson Witness Tiva also confirmed to Tzaneen Voice that the family’s matter is getting maximum attention.
