GIYANI – The 16-year-old Fhundzo Khomolo from Bungeni Village (Manyunyu section), who was admitted to Bungeni Initiation School on June 20, 2024, tragically passed away on the morning of July 7, 2024.

Khomolo’s friends and family will remember him as a beacon of inspiration for the youth in the community, known for his motivational efforts and his promising career as an author.

On the day of his passing, Khomolo complained of feeling unwell and was taken to a medical doctor for a check-up. He was given medication and declared to be in good condition. However, later in the day, he again complained of the same illness. The Traditional Surgeon took him back to the same doctor, who, after re-examining him, certified him dead.

Hosi Given Bungeni recounted, “Later on in the day, he again complained of the same illness. The Traditional Surgeon drove with him back to the same doctor who re-examined him and certified him dead.”

The parents and the South African Police Service (SAPS) were informed of the incident while at the doctor’s office.

MEC Basikopo Makamu emphasized the tragedy of losing even one child, stating, “The death of one child is just too many. We did not expect a death as our Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC), led by Hosi Shitlhangoma Chauke, had worked hard for a zero-death tolerance at our initiation schools around the province. As a department, we pass our deepest condolences to the bereaved Khomolo family.”

Hosi Bungeni has assured the Khomolo family that he will work closely with them in preparing for the funeral of their loved one, ensuring they receive the support they need during this difficult time.
