Tzaneen Voice will be taking this month to highlight success stories of entrepreneurs in this space, also looking at sustainable and responsible practices being pioneered by hospitality establishments, especially in this time of pressure on the natural resources.

Meet Masoko Vyad Rakubu, 40- year-old owner and founder of Shidila Lodge. Shedila is a Pedi verb meaning to grind. The name fits perfectly for a woman of her caliber, who has staying power and has stood the test of time.

“I worked for the municipality for a period of 12 years and that’s where I interacted with a lot of people in the tourism sector and I was able to identify an opportunity. I identified the need in the area and saw it viable to provide space where our community can host social gatherings and provide accommodation for tourists visiting our sites. I employed nine people, delegated to different tasks in the lodge,” she said.

The establishment is a 3- star hotel which began operation in December 2011; it offers 17 rooms with a stylish interior, refreshingly large apartment space with premium lifestyle facilities and warm service.

She further explained that the lodge has a restaurant with free breakfast, an outdoor pool, and 24-hour room service.

She mentioned that functions are hosted and they invite various guest speakers from time to time, to come and motivate black women on social issues and business ideas.

“We have been hosting events for four consecutive years and this has yielded positive results,” Rakubu explained.

However, there have been challenges on the journey of success. “The most difficult experience was during the initiation stage because clients would compare us with other well-established lodges that had been running for 20 or 30 years. Again, struggling to access funding for expansion also set us back,” she mentioned.

Travelers who eager for a bit of culture can stop at Tzaneen Museum, while those wishing to experience the area’s natural beauty can explore Sunland Baobab and Modjadji Cycad Reserve.

“I draw inspiration from seeing places like the Modjadji Dynasty, for their intriguing rain making powers and the baobab. These heritage sites have a huge impact when it comes to economic growth around the area,” she added.

Shedila Lodge is 7 minutes from Sunland Baobab,14.3 minutes (23 km) from Tzaneen Dam Nature Reserve, and 16.8 minutes (27 km) from Modjadji Cycad Reserve.

“When you want to start a journey, perform thorough research, and identify trailblazers who have traveled the road before you, seek advice, to avoid risks like litigation”. She said

You can secure a standard room at the lodge from as little as R500 per night, it is fully refundable with free cancellation.
