How a gardener beat the odds to be an award-winning musician and successful entrepreneur

PHALABORWA -He has been described as a musician and entrepreneur. His story is one of overcoming adversity and beating the odds.

Instead of letting his poor background define him, Thembinkosi Thethwayo (31) decided to face difficult circumstances to become a well-recognised musician.

The Lulekani-born star says his situation was very at home and that contributed to his performance and eventually, he dropped out in grade 10.

He further explains that he lacked basic school necessities such as school uniforms, therefore he had to find work as a gardener in Phalaborwa, work at the car wash and also help people with their groceries at Indian shops to survive.

Affectionately known by his fans as Mthimbani in music circles. Mthimbani’s love for music started in 2001 and he began writing his songs in 2008.

The dream of music continued and he did music with Young Rodney who was part of a group called PHB Boys.

In 2012 he released a famous love song called “It’s Over”. The song gained him popularity and was a hit song on the radio.

In 2019 he was the Munghana Lonene FM Best Gospel Song Award winner with his song ‘ndziti nyikele ka wena’.

In July 2022 he released a 15-track album called Change the World.

To get his branded items in different colours at an affordable price.

“As part of my spiritual journey I was in the process of being initiated as a sangoma but God had other plans for me I got saved and now I am now a born again chrsitian” he said

Mthimbana is now a Minister and Entrepreneur who owns his brand which he sells t-shirts, and caps of his brand in different colours. His slogan is ‘Mthimbani in God he trusts undefeated’.

The talented musician mentioned that he will soon release a new album called ‘Mhani wa mina.
