TZANEEN-Mindless thugs have vandalised 77 graves at Letaba Cemetery near Letaba Showgrounds on Monday, April 25.

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality is appealing to families with graves at the Cemetery to urgently visit the cemetery to check if their graves are not amongst the graves vandalised.

The GTM Spokesperson Naville Ndlala said they alerted the police of the incident and attempted to open a case but is not possible because it can only be done by the families whose graves have been tampered with.

“Families who have had burials at Letaba Cemetery are therefore advised to visit the cemetery to ascertain if headstones in their graves have been vandalised or not. Families are furthermore advised to open criminal cases with SAPS Tzaneen if their headstones are amongst the 77 vandalised” Said Ndlala

The motive behind the vandalising is not known at this stage

“We are presently unaware of the motive behind the vandalism, at the moment we can only suspect. We believe once criminal cases are opened with the SAPS; their investigations will provide clues” he continued

“The GTM strongly condemns this incident and sincerely apologises to the affected families”

“Families can contact Xoliswa Gala, the Manager for Parks, Recreation and Cemetery at 082 909-8848 for further details” He Concluded
