MARAKA VILLAGE- The community of Maraka village in Bolobedu, Greater Letaba is demanding answers after a head man admitted that he misused over R300 000 that was contributed by the community to assist with burials.
When the community demanded to see bank statements, they discovered that the money is being misused.
It alleged that the headman accessed the funds through some committee members.
The furious residents further alleged that the head man bought a car and built a house with the money.
Over 2000 community members are expected to contribute R30 every month to assist with the funeral arrangements.
After the confrontation, he committed that he will pay it back by the end of March.
“We confronted him and he promised to pay back half of the money before the end of March but he didn’t,” one community member said.
The residents are threatening to burn the car and the house.
A well-placed source who is very close to the head man tipped Tzaneen voice that the old doesn’t have money, he is relying on the Government grants.
“For him to raise that money it is highly impossible, he doesn’t have a cent,” said the source
Efforts to get a comment from the headman were unsuccessful.
