CAPE TOWN – As their remarkable journey in the Mother City comes to a close today, the Gauta BMX trio – Gauta Mahlakoane (21), Maxwell Ndou (24), and Karabo Mokoo (22) – marked Easter Sunday by attending a church service and visiting the office of the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba.
The trio, known as the BMX Gauta Team, received a special blessing from the Archbishop, who also donated R5,000 towards their BMX project aimed at empowering young people through cycling.
The Archbishop took the young cyclists on a tour of the Bishop’s Court, where they stood on the historic grounds where Nelson Mandela once stepped after his release from Robben Island.
The team embarked on an extraordinary 1,700-kilometre journey from Burgersfort to Cape Town to raise funds and secure sponsorships for their cycling club. Their mission is to create opportunities for young men in their community and steer them away from drugs and gangsterism.
Their inspiring effort has touched the hearts of many South Africans and attracted national support, including sponsors and donors.
Their arrival in Cape Town was celebrated by MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mr. Jerry Maseko, MEC for Health Ms. Dieketseng Mashego, and the Mayor of Fetakgomo-Tubatse Municipality, Cllr Eddie Maila, along with Western Cape Government representatives and their families.
