TEMBISA – At just 26 years old, Frederick Chauke from Musina has achieved a remarkable milestone, emerging victorious as Shoprite’s National Driver of the Year. Chauke triumphed over 1,400 skilled competitors to claim the prestigious title at the annual competition held in Gauteng.

Chauke, a truck driver for the Shoprite Group since 2022, showcased exceptional skill and professionalism in handling a sixteen-wheeler truck, earning recognition as one of South Africa’s most talented drivers.

Originally from Malele in Limpopo, Chauke’s passion for driving was nurtured by his father, a former government truck driver who also excelled in the profession.

“My father was a truck driver for over ten years. He used to take me on trips during school holidays and showed me what it meant to be a great driver,” said Chauke.

This legacy of excellence runs deep, as Chauke’s father once won a truck driving competition in Cape Town in 1997. Now retired, his father beams with pride at his son’s accomplishments.

Frederick’s journey with Shoprite began in 2021 when he joined through a learnership program. Within a year, his dedication and skill earned him a permanent position, setting the stage for his current success. Reflecting on the competition, Chauke admitted he was nervous but focused on maintaining the principles his father instilled in him: responsibility and precision.

“I was nervous about the competition, not because I doubted myself, but because I knew how experienced the other 12 finalists were,” he shared.

The National Driver of the Year Competition celebrates the professionalism and excellence of drivers who play a critical role in transporting essential goods across the continent. With a fleet of over 1,100 trucks and nearly 1,500 trailers, Shoprite relies on the dedication and skill of its drivers.

Ruaan Britz, Head of Transport at Shoprite’s Transport Centre of Excellence, lauded Chauke’s achievement, saying:

“Our truck drivers are the very best on the continent, and we ensure they receive ongoing training with frequent reassessments. We extend our congratulations to Frederick for emerging victorious in this year’s gruelling competition.”

Chauke’s victory not only highlights his individual talent but also underscores the essential contribution of truck drivers to the country’s economy. With his sights set on continued excellence, Frederick Chauke serves as an inspiration to young professionals across South Africa.
