Four suspects were arrested for illegal fishing and selling on R36

DAN VILLAGE-Four men between the ages of 29 and 40 years will appear before the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court following their arrest on Saturday for illegal fishing.

This follows a concern expressed by the community against illegal fishing around Greater Tzaneen.

A joint operation team comprised of SAPS including Crime Intelligence, private security and the Department of Agriculture was formed.

The suspects were arrested alongside the R36 between Tzaneen and Nkowakowa at around 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Meanwhile, police received a call from Department of Agriculture officers for backup earlier this week regarding illegal fishing taking place in the Nature reserve next to Merensky High School in Tzaneen.

On arrival, they found one suspect and he was searched and immediately arrested for illegal fishing upon searching his residence police also found porcupine and bushbaby meat.
