TZANEEN – Residents were concerned on Wednesday night when four hippos were spotted wandering along Voortrekker Street, between Aqua Spar and Letaba River Estate.

The sighting of these massive animals caused a stir, with many speculating about their origin.

It is believed that the hippos may have made their way from Tzaneen Dam or the stream running alongside Letaba River Estate. Hippos are known to travel along waterways, often moving significant distances in search of food or suitable habitats.

Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid any interaction with the animals. “Hippos are extremely dangerous and territorial. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to approach or attack them,” warned a spokesperson from the local wildlife management unit.

Community members have been advised to report any further sightings to authorities immediately to ensure the animals are safely guided back to their natural habitat without posing a threat to people or themselves.

Hippos are one of Africa’s most dangerous animals, despite their herbivorous nature. They can become highly aggressive when they feel threatened, making it crucial for residents to maintain a safe distance.

For now, efforts are underway to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of both the hippos and the Tzaneen community.
