KGAPANE-A former police captain who was attached to Modjadjiskloof police station has been sentenced to thirteen(13) years imprisonment for murder and attempted murder.
Dennis Paradise Nyungulu was sentenced in the Giyani magistrate court for killing Osi Mkhabela(23) and attempted murder of his elder brother (26), at the accused’s tavern in Makosha village, Giyani, on May 18, 2019.
It was revealed in court that the accused was about to close his tavern around 1 am when a fight ensued between him and a patron. The accused is said to have taken his wife’s licensed firearm and shot at the deceased and his brother.
Police were summoned to the scene and the deceased was certified dead while the brother was transported to hospital. Following the incident, community members went on a rampage and torched the accused’s vehicles and the tavern, while barricading roads with burning tyres.
The accused handed himself over to the police and was granted bail on June 02, 2019. On July 21, 2023, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for murder and three years for attempted murder.
The sentences will run concurrently.
