POLOKWANE-A 40-year-old foreign national was arrested on Sunday, 31 December 2024, at the Beitbridge Port of Entry after attempting to smuggle a stolen 2023 BMW G70 7 Series, valued at over R2 million, into Zimbabwe.
The incident took place at approximately 20:10 and was a significant bust during the heightened security of the Festive Season operations.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect presented a South African passport at the border, which initially appeared to be in order. However, further investigation raised suspicions about the true ownership of the luxury vehicle.
The BMW, which was flagged by authorities, had been reported as stolen by a South African bank. The suspect’s story about the “real owner” arriving in South Africa on 1 January 2025 only added to the suspicions surrounding the case.
The suspect was charged with possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and the use of fraudulent documents in an attempt to cross the border.
The luxury car was confiscated by authorities, and the individual is expected to face charges in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 3 January 2025.
Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the officers involved for their swift action.
“This arrest highlights the effectiveness of our operations during the Festive Season. The vigilance of our officers has ensured that another criminal act has been prevented,” Hadebe said. She added, “We are committed to cracking down on border crimes and ensuring criminals face the full might of the law.”
