SABIE-A field ranger sustained serious injuries after being bitten by a hippo in Sabie Gorge on Sunday, September 29.

The incident occurred in a remote area when the ranger, part of a SANParks team, was conducting routine duties.

According to SANParks, the ranger was bitten on the lower leg. A medical doctor was quickly dispatched to the scene and managed to stabilize the injured ranger.

Given the severity of the injury, the ranger was airlifted to a medical facility for further treatment.

“The immediate response of our medical teams helped ensure the ranger received the care he needed,” said SANParks in a statement. They added that further details on his condition will be provided once they are available.

Hippo attacks are rare but can be life-threatening due to the size and strength of the animals. SANParks urged those visiting or working in wildlife areas to remain cautious, particularly near water bodies where hippos are frequently found.

As the ranger recovers, SANParks has expressed its commitment to supporting him and his family during this difficult time. The park authorities also plan to investigate the circumstances that led to the attack.

Further updates on the ranger’s condition will be shared as they become available.
