THOHOYANDOU: The Thohoyandou Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) are hard at work in locating a known male suspect responsible for raping a 22-year-old woman on Sunday 29 October 2023.

The incident took place at Mutsha-Khwekhwe village under the Levubu policing area at about 14:00. It is reported that the victim was called by her neighbour believed to be her former boyfriend to his place of residence. Upon arrival, the victim found the suspect under the influence of alcohol and she was ordered to enter inside the house.

Afterwards, the suspect requested the victim to make him happy by engaging in sexual intercourse with him but she refused. Unexpectedly, the suspect allegedly took out a sharp object and an empty bottle and threatened to stab her if she did not comply.

Subsequently, the victim was pushed onto the bed and undressed before being raped by the suspect. Following the horrendous ordeal, the victim was released by the suspect and she went home to inform her family about the incident.

The matter was immediately reported at Levubu police station and a rape case was opened. The case was later transferred to the Thohoyandou FCS unit for further investigations.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has called on communities to partner with the police to put a complete halt to incidents of rape that have reached unprecedented levels.  “We urge our communities to do everything in their power to partner with the police to protect women and children, the elderly and the LGBTQIA+ community since they are the most vulnerable and targeted group by criminals,” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

A manhunt for the suspect has since been launched and anyone with information that can assist with his apprehension is encouraged to contact the Investigating Officer Sergeant Khorombi Manthaka on 0607700002 or crime stop number 0860010111 or nearest police station or MySAPSApp.
