POLOKWANE -Eskom CEO André de Ruyter survived an apparent attempt to murder him in his office at the company’s Megawatt Park head office in Johannesburg in December.
This is according to a report by Chris Yelland an energy analyst, publisher and journalist, who said De Ruyter drank a cup of coffee laced with cyanide
De Ruyter has confirmed the attack on his life, which occurred on Tuesday 13 December 2022, a day after he submitted his resignation as an executive to Eskom chairman Mpho Makwana but before it was made public on 14 December 2022 have become famous.
“I reported the matter to the SAPD [the South African Police Service] on 5 January 2023 and the matter can be assumed to be investigated,” he told EE Business Intelligence.
A reliable source outside Eskom indicated to EE Business Intelligence that De Ruyter, after drinking a cup of coffee in his office at Eskom Megawatt Park in Sunninghill, became weak, dizzy and confused, shaking uncontrollably, unsettled and threw it up. He then collapsed, unable to walk.
He was rushed by his security to his doctor’s office, where his condition was diagnosed as cyanide poisoning and treated accordingly.
The report said De Ruyter had confirmed the incident and that it was reported to the police on 5 January.
Tests taken afterwards confirmed increased levels of cyanide in his body.
