The field rangers who occupied a vehicle that was crashed by a lone elephant on R40 from Phalaborwa to Hoedspruit are fortunate to have not sustained any injuries.
The incident occurred earlier today when elephants broke out of the Foskor mine via the Selati river and damaged a reserve vehicle.
According to the reports, the elephants were chased back into Balule Nature Reserve close to the grietjie turn-off.
However, the fence is still down and there is a possibility of other wildlife accessing the roadway until the fence is repaired.
Balule Nature Reserve said they are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of animals and motorists on the R40 and will whenever possible respond swiftly to an incident to minimise any risk, even when the animals break out of other areas.
The road is now clear of elephants but a warning to all motorists to respect wildlife and also any officials trying to control the flow of traffic during operations to get animals to return to the various reserves.
Motorists are urged to travel with caution if they encounter elephants on that stretch of the road.
