EFF Ba-Phalaborwa sub-region rejects R5 Million Humulani bridge

By Mpho Modiba

PHALABORWA-The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it rejects the poorly constructed Humulani Access Bridge that was unveiled by Mayor of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Cllr Merriam Malatji in Majeje Village on Thursday, 11 April 2024.

The EFF says it is disappointed by the stance of the mayor to officially open such a shoddy bridge where there is no value for money. According to EFF, this is a clear demonstration that the ANC-led administration is not interested in providing quality infrastructure development projects that seek to benefit the residents of Majeje and Humulani villages.

The EFF says it cannot allow a situation wherein the ANC is using this project to campaign for votes in the upcoming general elections.  The residents of Majeje and Humulani villages deserve a quality bridge that guarantees their safety.

According to the municipal records, the project was budgeted for R4.9 million, it commenced in October 2022 and was completed in April 2023. It would be delusional to believe that the poorly done work on the installation of a stormwater culvert is worth the allocation.

EFF says it is vital that the council should instruct the Limpopo Provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure to inspect the bridge to confirm that it does not meet the required structural requirements to be declared operational.

The EFF says it is calling on the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality to recover the millions paid to the constructor for poor workmanship on the bridge. The constructor should also be blacklisted from doing business with the municipality.
