MOKOPANE – A drunk driver learned the hard way that bribery doesn’t pay after he was arrested by members of the National Traffic Police on Easter Friday for attempting to offer a bribe to avoid arrest.
The incident took place on the N1 in Mokopane, Limpopo, where the driver was pulled over during routine traffic operations.
Upon discovering that he was under the influence of alcohol, the man attempted to offer a R300 bribe, commonly referred to as a “cold drink,” to the officers in exchange for letting the offence slide.
However, the vigilant officers refused the bribe and immediately placed the suspect under arrest. He was taken to the Mokopane Police Station, where he was charged with drunk driving and bribery.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has since applauded the officers for their integrity, stating that they have demonstrated that road safety is not for sale.
RTMC spokespersons also confirmed that intensified drunk driving operations will continue throughout the weekend, especially as past trends indicate a spike in such offences during weekends and public holidays.
“Let this be a clear message to all motorists: bribery is a crime, and our officers are committed to keeping our roads safe,” said the RTMC.
