Police Minister Bheki Cele has confirmed that the number of fatalities at Enyobeni tavern, East London, has risen to 21. 17 of the victims died at the scene and another 3 reportedly died at the hospital.
This comes after the victims were gathered at a local hangout spot when some of them allegedly started collapsing. The victims are believed to be under 20 years, 12 boys and 9 girls.
An evidently distraught Cele gave the report outside Woodbrook mortuary, where the victims’ bodies were transported.
It is further reported that stampede has been ruled out as the possible cause of the tragedy. Investigation to determine exact cause of the deaths is still being investigated.
